27. Donkeys and oxcarts
22,5 x 30,1 cm | Hand-watercolor lithograph
Brave little grey donkeys! Why haven´t these humble Brazilian servers been honored with a monument yet? Be it in Pernambuco or Bahia, Fortaleza or João Pessoa, they are seen walking in small and hurried steps, resigned and tireless, or rather we perceive them, for they often disappear under their load: bundles of sugar cane, baskets of fruits or manioc, huge palm leaves destined to cover a hut, and sometimes, parading on top of it all, the donkey´s owner.
We see them, along the roads and we hear the screeching of the
oxcarts with their solid wood wheels, peaceful and heavy vehicles that
belong to a world where time has not yet acquired an essential value.
