21. Recife set on the waters
19,8 x 27,4 cm | Hand-watercolor lithograph
On the sea of Veronese green, and on the Capibaribe and on the
Beberibe¹
of a dark bay mud color, but which, in the morning, when
the sleepy waters still flow lazily, transform themselves into perfect
flawless mirrors which reflect the old pink theatre, the palm trees and
the bridges, the cement and metal bridges, the belfries and the roofs of
old Recife; on the Capibaribe and on the Beberibe, where can also be
seen skyscrapers of a hundred eyes, whose ugliness we forgive when,
at night, their masses confounded in darkness, they are nothing but
invisible columns carrying high in the sky luminous billboards of
ever-changing colors, whose flowing reflections under the evening
breeze offer us a magical spectacle. We part regretfully when a sudden
downpour comes to interrupt our enchantment.
