Led by old officiators, guardians of the rites and the ceremonial, attentive to the orders of the pai de Santo¹ , the novices sway to the beat, singing their mysterious dirges that drummers rhythm with deliriously agile hands.
Noble foreigner, they had me sit in the reserved room. Someone
pushes me with uncalled for insistence. Annoyed, I turn around...
and see, tied to the leg of a table, a superb white goat. Ignoring
the mortal fate awaiting him, he gives me, rhythmically, friendly
pokes with his horn.
